October 6 marks the beginning of the construction project slated to add 11 new classrooms at Pelham Oaks Elementary School. The new wing of classrooms will be placed at the south end of the building. The $4.1 million project is partially funded by a state bond issue for capital projects at Alabama schools, along with some of the system’s local funding for special projects.

“Pelham City Schools’ enrollment has grown by 12% over the last five years”, says superintendent Dr. Scott Coefield. “The new classrooms will provide more space for students and teachers at Pelham Oaks and create similar-sized elementary schools in our system.”

In addition to the new classrooms, the construction project also includes the painting of the school’s roof and resurfacing of the parking lot.

“It’s exciting to see the project getting started”, says Pelham Oaks principal Chase Holden. “We added the new gymnasium and art and music classrooms in 2018, and now, this addition creates a brand new space for our future fourth and fifth graders. We appreciate the collaboration from our school board and central office in developing proactive facility plans that benefit our students and teachers.”

The classroom additions and other school improvements are scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
