PHS & PPMS Awarded Robotics Grants

PHS & PPMS Awarded Robotics Grants
Posted on 01/24/2019
Congratulations to Pelham High School and Pelham Park Middle School who were recently awarded ALSDE Robotics Grants totaling nearly $2500! The grants were awarded to 244 schools across the state and are designed to launch and/or expand robotics education in the classroom.

At PHS, the grant will be used in computer science classes to purchase Lego Mindstorms. The students will use the new equipment to build and program the robots to complete "missions" they design, such as walking, lifting, avoiding obstacles, or even talking.

At PPMS, Automation and Robotics classes will purchase a VEX IQ robotics kit and competition playing field. Students will apply design and engineering principles to design, build, program, test and refine robots to meet the various VEX IQ challenges and then use their robots and skills in inter-team and local competitions.

Teachers are excited to add these engaging devices to the Digital Literacy and Computer Science curriculum for our students. Students will also benefit from familiarity with the cognitive and technical skills associated with computer science and programming, which are among the 21st-century workforce demands.

Special thanks to our teachers who collaborated on the vision, writing, and submission of the grants: Mrs. Crain, Mrs. Tucker, Mr. Cobb (PHS), and Ms. Dixon and Mrs. Holland (PPMS).
